CNC Steel

CNC machining steel service - steel CNC machining parts supplier

Steel is a type of iron containing alloy with a carbon content of approximately 1%. To improve its performance, a small amount of other alloying elements such as chromium and molybdenum can be added. Due to its excellent processability and weldability, steel is an ideal choice in terms of low cost and high functionality. However, steel will oxidize over time, so surface treatment is needed to protect it.

We have highly skilled experts who can handle all your affairs related to steel CNC machining. We can ensure the accuracy, economy, and quality of your project components. Specifically, we can use processes such as CNC milling, turning, grinding, electrical discharge machining, and wire cutting electrical discharge machining to process your steel parts.

What is CNC steel processing?

Processing plays an important role in many manufacturing processes. Once upon a time, this process relied entirely on manual operation, which was both laborious and time-consuming. Nowadays, machining services have achieved automation, and computer numerical control (CNC) machining is such a key application. Basically, CNC machining is the use of computers to control the movement of specific cutting tools in order to process metal and plastic materials into the desired shapes and geometric structures. Due to its fast processing speed, high precision, and high production efficiency, this automated machining process is quite popular in the manufacturing industry. There are various materials suitable for CNC machining, and steel is no exception. In fact, CNC machining of steel parts is one of the most typical customized machining components and prototype products.

Steels

Steel is one of the most common manufacturing materials, used in various major industries from automobiles to construction. It is a widely used and cost-effective material with many excellent characteristics. However, choosing the materials to be used is only the first step. You must also choose from different levels. The characteristics of each type of steel determine their respective uses in specific processing projects. Here are some of the most common steels we provide in CNC machining:

Steel 1018Steel 4130Steel 4140
1018 steel is commonly referred to as low-carbon steel, which is very easy to forge, weld, form, and process at high temperatures, making it advantageous for products that require severe bending or other delicate features. Therefore, it is commonly used for applications such as spindles, rods, shafts, or pins. It is also very suitable for surface hardening processes such as carburizing. This type of alloy steel is usually considered as alloy steel because it has a higher content of alloying elements compared to ordinary low-carbon steel. It is a particularly tough steel that is relatively easy to heat treat and has strong processability. 4130 steel is very suitable for most heat treatment processes. Applications include drill bits, faucets, and aircraft engine mounts.4140 steel, a low-alloy steel, is very similar to 4130 but has a higher carbon content. This chemical composition enhances the toughness, strength, and ductility of the steel grade. In addition, the additional chromium makes this grade more corrosion-resistant. Applications include thin-walled pressure vessels, high-strength bolts, and main shafts.

Steel 1045Steel 1215Steel 4340
1045 steel is considered as medium carbon steel, composed of carbon, iron, silicon, manganese, and sulfur or phosphorus. This is one of the most common steel grades used by manufacturers for CNC steel parts. Its high strength and toughness make it reasonable to use it in many CNC steel processing projects that are crucial for waterproofing. This grade of steel is considered easy to process due to its relatively high sulfur content. In addition, many people refer to it as a screw because it is used in the automatic screw machine process. However, the weldability of this material is poor. It is very suitable for manufacturing screws, pins, studs, and parts that usually require extensive processing. This grade of steel is a low-alloy and high-strength metal. It exhibits incredible strength and toughness, and maintains these characteristics at relatively high temperatures. 4340 steel is commonly used in typical applications such as shafts, gears, and other structural components.

Surface treatment and post-processing options for steel parts

After the manufacturing process is completed, surface treatment is often required to better meet functional and aesthetic requirements. To improve the mechanical performance of steel CNC machined parts, we provide the following common surface treatment methods for steel:

Powder CoatingCarburizationNickel PlatingGrind
Powder coating is a process of depositing dry powder on the surface of steel to form a strong surface coating, with a coating thickness typically ranging from 0.006 inches (0.1524 millimeters) to 0.012 inches (0.3048 millimeters). This method can improve the corrosion resistance of CNC steel parts. Due to the easy rusting of bare steel, powder coating is of great benefit to it.Carbonization treatment is a chemical heat treatment process that involves infiltrating additional carbon elements into the surface of steel. In this process, the steel is heated and insulated in a carburizing medium so that carbon atoms can penetrate its surface. This process can significantly improve the hardness and wear resistance of certain steels. This surface treatment process involves electroplating steel by depositing a layer of 0.1 millimeters thick nickel on the surface of the part. Carbon steel can be uniformly nickel plated to improve its corrosion resistance and wear resistance. The use of this surface treatment method is to remove unevenness and make the surface of CNC processed steel smoother. Generally speaking, manufacturers will use grinding wheels for this operation.

The advantages and challenges of CNC steel parts

In order to produce reliable products every time, proper processing of steel parts requires a lot of experience and skills. Although steel processing is a challenge, the benefits of CNC machining of steel are more obvious compared to its processing difficulty.

Advantage

When it comes to the existing steel alloys on the market, you will find a large number of steel alloys with good machinability. This means that this metal is easy to cut or shape, thus achieving good processing results. Factors such as hardness, energy, shear stress, and power are closely related to the machinability of steel CNC machining.

Another advantage of CNC steel processing for mechanical parts is its excellent corrosion resistance and wear resistance. In addition, steel parts processed by CNC can usually be subjected to various surface treatment methods.

Challenge

Despite the advantages mentioned above, there are still some challenges and factors to consider when using CNC technology to process steel parts. Firstly, not all steel parts are easy to process. This means that certain steels may be difficult to use in projects with complex geometric shapes.

In addition, different steels have different thermal sensitivities. Numerical control machining may not be suitable for certain steels because during the machining process, they may melt and deform when subjected to a large amount of heat.
