Main terms in CNC machining
Release time:2024/11/22
Familiarity with CNC machining terminology in this field is crucial. Some common CNC related terms include:
Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Computer aided design is software that creates graphical representations of the final parts required for 2D or 3D. Usually, complex parts are produced by breaking them down into small parts, each with its own CAD model.
AutoCAD and FreeCAD are the two most popular CAD applications, with the latter being completely free.
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)
Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software generates CNC programs that machines can understand. These programs help automate different types of machines, including CNC machines.
CAM software is used in conjunction with CAD programs to perform operations using CNC machine tools. Most high-quality CNC machine tools are equipped with complementary CAM software.
Distributed Numerical Control (DNC)
In a distributed numerical control (DNC) setup, multiple machine tools can be connected to a central server. The central server processes design files and sends commands to each machine tool separately.
When the memory of a single CNC machine is too small to handle software, DNC will be used. It can also be used in places where multiple CNC machines need to work synchronously to achieve faster operational capabilities.
Manufacturing Data Collection (MDC)
Manufacturing Data Collection (MDC), as the name suggests. Manufacturing data collection software collects real-time generated data on different manufacturing information from machines and operators.
This information can help manufacturers improvise on existing production lines. It also points out the reasons for any delays and losses in production.
What are G-code and M-code?
G code and M code are the files required for the operation of CNC machines. These all have their own importance, and we will introduce them one by one:
G code
The "G" in G-code refers to geometry, making G-code a geometric code. G-code is an alphanumeric command that tells CNC machines how to move.
The X, Y, and Z references in G code refer to the axis of movement, and the numbers are related to the values in that specific axis. N refers to the line number.
Some specific codes refer to the specific operational capabilities of the machine, such as adjusting spindle speed or opening and closing the spindle.
M code
M code refers to various machine codes that perform non cutting actions of CNC machines. These operations include starting and stopping different programs, controlling coolant flow, or adjusting the behavior of machining tools.
